Some clips from the Rannoch banter/chatter/whitter area following Big Al's last Munro gig:

  • Rhona 15 Sept 03 – A correspondent on Big Al’s last M:

Well it seems I missed the exciting advance party start although nearly took them out as we careered passed them on our way down towards the bridge, Bish at the controls. After obligatory nonsense, slagging and bragging donned, thermals, boots and waterproofs and set off to catch them up - easily accomplished as Shaz was leading (the advanced party). Not that we were being competitive. Brief stop on South col to orientate maps and brains. After much discussion about direction we resorted to the GPS and headed for the top. Massive cairn stakeout ensued, preventing other innocent walkers from even seeing never mind touching the cairn - they'll just have to do it again! Then followed a frenzy of alcohol consumption as everybody scrambled to empty their bottles and lighten their sacs. All except for JD who flashed around a gold-topped bottle before hiding it back in his sac presumably for the next one (watch for that Anoif). Lubricated by evil compounds, the descent and the rest of the event flashed by in a fog of mud, ping pong, the Jam, good food and dodgy company. Biggest learning for me came from CG who told me to always type my postings into word, then do spell and grammar check, then to think, check again, think again and then post. All seems too complicated so have just gone for the word option but not the thinking - seemed more appropriate considering the target audience! I think the M in M-point is for Marvellous!!

  • Big Al’s self-correspondence 15 Sept 03 following last M bash:

To Alasdair, Andrew, Anoif, Anna, Bill, Bish, Calum (wee), Calum (big), Carol, Catherine, Chris, Colin, Craig, Davy, Fiona, Font, Fraser, Gavin, Gordon, Helen, Iain, Iffat, Isobel, JD, Karen, Kevin, Mac, Martin, Mary, Maureen, Nodrog, Rhona, Riceboy, Shandboy, Shaz, Trish and anyone I've inadvertently forgotten.....THANK YOU FOR MAKING IT TRULY A DAY THAT I WILL NEVER REMEMBER. Fantastic.

  • Big Al, 16 Sept 03:

In the sad and competitive world of the Rannoch, once a new low has been set it is essential that the next event lives down to it.

Calum, I suspect that the rumours that you have sobered up are grossly exaggerated. Shaz, 15 Sep 2003

Just like to concur with Al in thanking all those who turned up to make it a truly fab weekend. Special thanks however must go to the following : Kevin P - for his superb mass catering effort Gordon & Fiona - for their recommendation of the venue Big Al - for getting his ass round the other 287 (?) prior to this weekend JD - for his performance of “That sinking feeling” JD - for his performance of “The Fall Guy” Colin - for the TT game and keeping me off the beer for 10 mins Sharon & Rhona - for some “close-up” dancing – it just wouldn’t have worked with Al, Gav, Bish et al Special thanks to all those who gave me a jump this weekend (you’ll be pleased to hear I ‘ve purchased a new battery) and most importantly to the guy who handed in my car/house keys which he found on the road somewhere in the vicinity of the pub (don’t ask as I don’t know!). Roll on the 4th October……

I was trying to remember where I was at the weekend... seems I must have been at your last Munro... thanks for reminding me, but I'm sure I'll also forget again by tomorrow morning. Great gig Bud!

JD breaking radio silence to confirm that not a sober breath was drawn until Sunday night - after a lengthy run to get some oxygen back in the drink stream and to avoid immolation in the event of encountering naked flame. Al, quite an event, the clock is reset, fancy a race??

  • From: Big Al, Date: 12 Sep 2003:

It is my sad duty to report the death of Johnnie Cash. This weekend, I understand C shall be wearing ceremonial black socks - at half mast of course.

Sorry JD – NO CAN DO… Sorry JD mateman - can't make either of those 2 dates.....8/9 November is my great-great-great-grandmother-in-law's 200th Birthday Commemorative Race up the Old Man of Hoy and the 29/30 November is the 20th Anniversary Celebration of the last time you bought a round in the pub for the lads. Now just what are the chances of those 2 events cropping up? Jeezoman. I ask you. Damn. Sorry bud. True.
